PANDEMIC COMMUNITY BANDSTAND GATHERS INCREASING SUPPORT

The proposal to build an outside performing space in the centre of Dorking’s Meadowbank park is gaining much support from local musicians, drama groups and bands.

Brainchild of a local musician, two ideas – how to honour the NHS, key workers and volunteers and the need for a new, open air performing venue – came together in the project to build a new, multi-purpose bandstand.

Speaking to The Stage newspaper, project founder, Stephen Williams said:

“We need to honour and remember all those who have helped us through the Pandemic. Dorking also needs an open air performing venue in the centre of the town. What better than a new bandstand to replace the one we lost in the early 1960s? The idea is already being very strongly supported by the local council and a wide variety of performing groups.”

2. A Charitable Incorporated Organisation  (CIO) has been set up to provide a focus for the project, fund raising and project management.
3. The trustees of the organisation are to be Stephen Williams, Councillor Nick Wright and local award winning playwright, Tony Earnshaw.
4. It is estimated that we will need to raise around £200,000 to cover the capital costs to build the venue and provide funds for it’s future running. It is hoped that in due course, the venue will be self funding in terms of running costs.
5. The aim of the project, as well as providing a focus for performing groups, is to provide a notable, lasting, civic legacy.
